Enrolment
When Your Child Can Start Preschool
Your child is entitled to access 4 terms (1 year) of government preschool in the year before they start school.
All Department for Education kindergartens are introducing a mid-year intake for preschool. This means from 2023 children who turn 4:
- before 1 May are eligible to start preschool at the beginning of the year
- from 1 May to 31 October can start preschool at the mid-year intake which is the beginning of term 3 of that year
Regardless of whether your child starts at the beginning of the year, or through a mid-year intake they will undertake 4 terms of preschool. Children who commence pre-school at mid-year will undertake 6 terms of Reception.
If your child turns 4 after 31 October they can start preschool at the beginning of the following year.
If you are uncertain about the best time for your child to start preschool or feel your child may benefit from starting preschool later, please talk to us about your options.
If your child is Aboriginal or under guardianship (in care) they are eligible for 12 hours of preschool after they turn 3. They will then be eligible for 15 hours per week of preschool in the year before they start school.
Early Entry
If you have a child with disability or additional needs, they might be able to start preschool earlier if there are places available. Talk to us if this applies to you. Being given early entry to preschool does not guarantee early entry to school.
How to Enrol
You can register your interest to enrol your child with us by using the preschool registration of interest form preschool registration of interest form. This form is also available from us.
Once a registration form is submitted, we will ask you for documentation supporting your child’s proof of age (copy of birth certificate or passport).
Try to register your interest by 30 June for children eligible for the beginning of the year intake and by 30 September by children eligible for mid-year intake but you can submit a registration of interest at any time.
Priority will be given to children living in our catchment area. If you are not sure you can find what catchment area you are in through our preschool and school finder.
If we can give your child a place we will send you an offer letter in term 3 for children starting at the beginning of the year. You can accept the offer by completing the acceptance slip by the due date on the letter.
Where there are more children seeking to enrol in a preschool than places available, the preschool will allocate places using priority of access criteria. Ask your preschool director for more information.
Before Your Child Starts
We will contact you in the term prior to your child starting about pre-entry orientation sessions and parent information sessions. These are an opportunity for your child to meet our educators and other children.
We run a playgroup on every Friday morning of term, except the for last week of term, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. All children and their carers are welcome. Please bring a snack for your child. Playgroup costs $3 for a casual visit or $20 per child per term of $35 per family. Playgroup is a wonderful opportunity to meet local families and enjoy our facilities. It is also an opportunity for your child to develop social skills and become familiar with the kindergarten
